Abstract

A polymerization catalyst for butadiene is made by reacting LiAl tetraalkyl and/or LiAl alkylhydride with TiBr4 and I2, IBr, ICl, and a mixture of I2 and Br2 which contains more than 30 mol per cent. of iodine, the proportions of the catalyst components being such that the molar ratio of TiBr4 and halogen being within the range of 1:1 to 1:6, and the molar ratio of TiBr4 and the LiAl compound being within the range of 1:2.5 to 1:8. The polymerization is generally effected in an inert hydrocarbon diluent, and the catalyst may be formed in situ. The polybutadiene which can be vulcanized, has a high film strength and a cis-1,4 content of not higher than 95%. The LiAl compounds may be LiAl(C4H9)4, LiAl(n-C4H9) (isoC4H9)3, LiAl(n-C8H17) (C2H5)3, or <FORM:0966068/C3/1>
