An apparatus for securing a lid 3 of soft metal foil material to a container 1 made of tinplate, plastic or like material and having a projecting flange 2 comprises means operative in the course of a single stroke of a plunger 18 to produce relative axial movement between the container with the lid applied thereto and a prefolding tool 20, in the course of which the prefolding tool bends down the projecting margin of the lid and then to produce relative axial movement between a sealing tool 11, 14 and the container with applied lid whereby such bent margin is folded beneath the container flange and pressed tightly against this flange. The container 1, Fig. 1, is supported on an ejector plate 4 which is adjustable in height and depressible against the action of a spring 8. The plunger 18, having a press plate 19 at its lower end, is arranged to be moved down on to the lid together with the prefolding tool 20 which surrounds the press plate and is spring- loaded against the latter. The sealing tool consists of a base plate 11 and a series of arcuate sections 14 which can expand radially against the action of a garter spring 15 between the base plate and a surrounding plate 13 arranged to provide an abutment surface for the prefolding tool 20. Upon initial depression of the plunger 18 the press plate 19 and prefolding tool 20, Fig. 2, descend as a unit so that the projecting margin of the lid is bent downwardly. Further depression of the plunger causes the prefolding tool 20 to lodge on to the stop plate 13 while allowing the press plate 19 to continue on its downward stroke. Upon striking the inner inclined surface 17 of the arcuate sections 14, the lid margin will be turned inwardly. Still further depression of the plunger results in the sections 14 being forced outwardly to allow passage of the press plate, container and lid until abutment occurs on the base plate 11, at which stage the lid margin is bent upwardly under the flange of the container and tightly compressed by the press plate to form a seal with the container flange.
