[Also in Division E2] A coupling detachably securing a press tool to a press comprises a piston-rod 21 operatively connected to the press tool, the piston being slidable within a cylinder 13 carried by the press, spring means 23 urging the piston inwardly of the cylinder to hold the tool and press together and means for selectively applying fluid under pressure to the cylinder to oppose the action of the spring means to permit the tool to be detached. As shown, the cylinder 13 is secured to a platen 11 of the press by bolts 14; the piston-rod 21 is extended by means of a sleeve 30 attached to the rod 21 by a bayonettype catch 31 and a tool-holder 12 is attached to the sleeve by a cotter 32 which passes through a slot in it. The rod 21 terminates at its upper end in a piston 19 and the piston is urged towards the upper end of the cylinder 13 by the resilient means 23 which are spring discs located between the piston 19 and an endplate 24 of the cylinder 13 and surrounding the rod 21. The resilient means 23 act to retract the rod 21 inwardly of the cylinder and thus to pull the holder 12 into close engagement with the platen 11. The upper end of the cylinder is closed by a plate 17 having a bore connected to a pipe 29 which leads to a source of pressure fluid which enables the piston to be moved in opposition to the pressure of the spring discs 23 thus allowing the holder 12 to move away from the platen 11 and, provided the weight of the holder 12 is taken by a support member, allowing the cotter 32 to be readily removed from the slots in holder 12 and sleeve 30 to release holder 12. Sleeves of different length can be used for attaching different holders to the platen 11. The press may have a plurality of couplings, each controlled by hydraulic valves.
