Abstract

A photoconductive composition comprises a mixture of two or more polymers, at least one of which is photoconductive and at least one of which contains halogen. Specified photoconductive polymers are (a) those mentioned in Specification 964,878 (vinyl polymers and copolymers, and polyesters), (b) polymers and copolymers of polyvinylcarbazole, (c) polymers of vinyl compounds where the vinyl group is attached to an aromatic or heterocyclic nucleus through a divalent organic radical (e.g. methacryloxy and methacryloxyalkyl compounds), (d) vinyl polymers containing a side-chain of the type Ar-(CH=CH)n-CO-(CH=CH)m-Ar where m is 1 or 2 and n is 0 or 1, and (e) reaction products of halogenated polymers with aromatic or heterocyclic compounds. Specified halogen-containing polymers are polyvinyl halides and copolymers thereof, polyvinyl esters of chloroacids, chlorinated and sulphochlorinated polyethylene, rubber hydrohalides, chlorinated rubber, brominated and iodinated poly-N-vinyl-carbazole, iodinated polystyrene, the reaction product of polyvinyl chloride and pyridine, and polyesters of dicarboxylic and disulphonic acids with halogen-containing dihydroxy compounds. There may also be present one of the macromolecular substances mentioned in Specification 964,873, a metal-containing polymer (e.g. the mercuri-acetate of polyvinylcarbazole or of polystyrene), a sensitiser as in Specification 964,873, a plasticizer or one of the other agents mentioned in Specification 964,873. It is preferable but not essential to remove from the halogen-polymer the stabilizers normally present therein. The various polymers can be dissolved or dispersed in an organic liquid and the mixture evaporated. If the product is heated to 50-200 DEG C. an increase in photo-sensitivity is stated to occur. The preparation of the following polymers is described: polyvinylcarbazole, polypropenylcarbazole, brominated and iodinated polyvinylcarbazole, iodinated polystyrene, iodinated copolymer of polyvinylcarbazole and ethyl acrylate, and the condensation products of (a) polyvinylacetophenone with anthraldehyde or N-ethylcarbazole -2- aldehyde, (b) polyvinylacetylcarbazole with N-methylphenthiazine -3- aldehyde, and (c) polyvinyl chloride with fluorene.
