Abstract

1436927 Styrene resin sheet materials FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd and SEKISUI KAGAKU KOGYO KK 28 Feb 1974 [1 March 1973] 9196/74 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] Sheet materials suitable for use as photographic material supports are formed from compositions comprising (1) a homopolymer or copolymer of styrene, α-methyl styrene, mmethyl styrene, p-methyl styrene, dimethyl styrene and/or methoxy styrene, optionally in admixture with another polymer, and (2) 2 to 40% by weight of the polymer of a powdered white pigment of particle size less than 1À5 microns, at least one surface of the sheet being smooth so as to have a surface gloss higher than 1À6 lines/mm. as measured by the reflection resolution test. Specified other polymers include copolymers of ethylene with propylene, vinyl acetate, acrylic and methacrylic acids, esters and salts, natural rubber, polyisoprene, polybutadiene, polychloroprene, polybutene, butadiene/styrene and butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymers and polyurethanes. The pigment may be titanium dioxide, zinc white, calcium sulphate, barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, lithopone, titanium phosphate and zirconium dioxide. The compositions may also contain stabilizers, lubricants, antistatic agents, colorants and fluorescent dyes; and may be extruded to form sheets to which gloss may be imparted by calendering or contacting with a glossing roll. The sheets may be treated with radiation, corona discharge, flame or ozone to improved adhesion; rubbed, e.g. with hydrolysed or halfesterified maleic anhydride copolymers; and used as a base for photographic elements. In examples sheets are prepared from compositions comprising (1) impact resistant polystyrene, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and titanium dioxide; (2) polystyrene, styrene/butadiene rubber, titanium dioxide, phthalocyanine blue and butylated hydroxytoluene; (3) impact resistant polystyrene, acrylonitrile/styrene copolymer, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, titanium dioxide and aluminium stearate; and (4) styrene/acrylonitrile/butadiene and ethylene/ propylene copolymers, zinc white and sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate.
