Abstract

A polymer containing units of 9,10-dimethylene anthracene having the formula <FORM:1101391/C3/1> is made from 9-vinylanthracene or poly-9-vinyl anthracene in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, a peroxide or sulphuric acid. A polymer containing 5-40 mole per cent of 9:10-dimethylene anthracene and 95-60 mole per cent of 9-ethylene anthracene is made by treating 9-vinyl-anthracene or poly-9-vinyl-anthracene in bulk or in toluene, benzene, or methylene chloride with TiCl4, TiF4, BF3, AlCl3, SnCl4, CF3CO2H or benzoyl or di-tert.-butyl peroxide. The polymer may be compounded with polystyrene, chlorinated diphenyl, polyvinyl cinnamate, 2-methylanthraquinone, crystal violet, methylene blue, phthalic anhydride, benzene, chlorobenzene or benzyl alcohol.
