964,785. Tailstocks. P. F. DE VALLIERE. June 16, 1961 [June 24, 1960], No. 21942/61. Heading B3T. A tailstock is provided with a number of feed drives for the spindle one of which is by a hand wheel and the other or others by mechanical drive means, a single movable member enabling the drive to be changed. The centrespindle 1, Fig. 1, of the tailstock is provided with a rack 3 the teeth on which are cut as part of a cylindrical " thread." A pinion 4 on a transverse shaft 5 operated by a hand wheel gives a quick-feed. A sleeve 7, threaded interiorly to match the rack teeth is rotatable and supported within a further eccentric sleeve 9, Figs. 1 and 3, threaded into the tailstock housing. Adjustment of a collar 10 on this sleeve brings the threaded member 7 into engagement with the rack for slow-feed operation by the hand wheel 8. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 4, a pinion 18 engages the rack for a quick-feed and a smaller pinion 26, meshing therewith and slidably keyed to a shaft 24, may be moved by a control lever into three positions, viz.: (1) where a slow drive is taken through hand wheel 22, skew-gear sleeve 23, pinion 26 and rack pinion 18; (2) mechanical drive from a shaft 27 and skew-gear 29 to pinion 26 etc.; (3) a mid-neutral position when the quick-speed may be operated.
