Abstract
The invention comprises the ephedrine salts of both the dextro-rotatory and laevo-rotatory enantiomorphs of 1b -hydroxy-3-carboxy-6-methoxy-9ab -methyl-1, 2, 3a, 8, 9, 9a-hexahydro-D 3(3a)-benzo-[e]-indene, and a process for the resolution of a racemate of 1 b -hydroxy-3-carboxy-6-methoxy-9ab -methyl-1, 2, 3a, 8, 9, 9a-hexahydro-D 3(3a)-benzo-[e]-indene by directly reacting said racemate with ephedrine in an aqueous medium, or by indirectly reacting said racemate with ephedrine by the formation of the water-soluble salts of ephedrine and the racemate and then reacting metathetically in an aqueous medium, separating the precipitated ephedrine salt of the dextro-rotatory enantiomorph and acidifying the salt to liberate the free dextrocompound, and acidifying the aqueous medium remaining after precipitating the ephedrine salt of the dextro-rotatory enantiomorph to precipitate the laevo-rotatory enantiomorph. In the indirect process the water-soluble salt of the racemate may be an alkali metal salt, and the water-soluble salt of ephedrine may be a salt derived from a strong mineral acid such as a hydrochloride or sulphate salt.
