Abstract

Dehumidified combustible gas of predetermined calorific value is produced by vaporizing a liquefied petroleum gas by heat contained in a stream of moisture-containing gas of lower calorific value, with simultaneous cooling of said gas and condensation of the moisture therein, and mixing the lower calorific value gas with vaporized petroleum gas, at least a part of the vaporized gas being that vaporized by the moisture-containing gas, the condensed moisture being separated before or after the mixing is effected, determining the calorific value of the mixed gas, and adjusting the relative proportions of gases to obtain a mixture of the desired calorific value. In a modification, the petroleum gas is vaporized by and mixed with the moisture containing gas of lower calorific value, the temperature of the cooled gas is determined, and the rate of vaporization is adjusted so that the temperature is maintained above the ice formation temperature, after which the calorific value is adjusted by the addition of separately vaporized petroleum gas. The liquid petroleum gas may be introduced directly into the stream of moisture-containing gas, for example in the throat of a Venturi, the condensed moisture droplets being removed in a cyclone or knock-out drum, or indirect heat-exchange may be employed. Suitable apparatus is described.
