Abstract
Sorbic acid is purified by dissolving the impure acid in a relatively non-volatile, thermally-stable solvent, contacting the solution at a temperature in the range of about 160 DEG -180 DEG C. with an inert gas whereby sorbic acid volatilizes into the gas, and separating the purified acid from the mixture of gas and vapour by condensation or by washing the mixture with a suitable solvent, such as water or dodecyl benzene. The contacting stage and the washing stage may suitably be carried out in packed columns wherein the liquid flows counter current to the gas. Liquid paraffin having a minimum boiling-point of at least 300 DEG C. is a suitable solvent for dissolving the impure sorbic acid; mention is also made to dialkylphthalates in this respect. Inert gases specified are nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and steam.
