Abstract
1,263,505. Purifying hydrofluoric acid; silicon tetrafluoride. BUSS A.G. 4 March, 1969 [9 March, 1968], No. 11423/69. Heading C1A. High per cent hydrofluoric acid, substantially free from SiF 4 , is obtained from H 2 SiF 6 solutions or HF, SiF 4 and/or H 2 SiF 6 mixtures by contacting the solution or mixture in an absorption column with an organic solvent for HF and, to a lesser extent, H 2 O and SiF 4 , thereafter scavenging the said solvent and its contacts in a separating column by contra-flow of a gas inert to H 2 O, HF or H 2 SiF 6 , to remove at least the majority of the SiF 4 and H 2 O therefrom and then separating HF from the scavenged solvent, the process being carried out above the condensation temperature of any vapour mixture present. Suitable inert gases are nitrogen or carbon dioxide, and the inert gas is preferably also led into the absorption column to improve the selectivity of the solvent for HF as compared to H 2 O and SiF 4 . Suitable solvents are aliphatic polyethers or polyols especially polyglycols. The inert gas may be preheated and the temperature suitably drops from 135‹ to 100‹ C. in contraflow to the liquid phase.
