Abstract

A multistage process for producing dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane comprises (1) partial reaction at -3 to +8 DEG C. of monochlorobenzene and trichloroacetaldehyde in presence of sulphuric acid, containing at least 97% H2SO4 and/or parachlorobenzene sulphuric acid and at most 3% free SO3, in an amount between 50 and 80% of that required to promote complete reaction, and (2) in at least one further stage, contacting the reaction mixture from (1) in presence of a suspension of product crystals at 0-20 DEG C. with a quantity of sulphuric acid sufficient to complete the reaction.
