Abstract
962,756. Refractory bricks. R. P. HEWER. Oct. 2, 1961 [Oct. 14, 1960], No. 35521/61. Addition to 873,283. Heading F4B. A composite refractory brick comprises a plurality of individual secondary bricks and a metal casing which holds the secondary bricks in place. The secondary bricks may be of the same or different materials, e.g. chromemagnesia and magnesia-chrome. As shown, two secondary bricks 38 are individually co-moulded with metal plates 20 which cover all of one major lateral face and have tabs 22 extending on to the mirror lateral faces. The plate 20 may have projections which bind with the body of the brick, Fig. 2 (not shown), or may have welded thereto a U-section metal plate, Fig. 3 (not shown), which is embedded in the refractory during moulding. As shown in Figs. 16 and 17, a metal plate 37 is inserted between the refractory major faces of the two secondary bricks 38 and metal connector plates 43 are spot-welded to the tabs 22 and plate 37 to hold the assembly together. A hanger tab 52 is included in one of the secondary bricks during moulding and the connector plates have extensions 46 at the cold end of the brick to act as cooling fins. The hanger may be omitted, Fig. 8 (not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 13, the separating plate 37<SP>1</SP> is extended at the cold end of the brick and has a hanger recess 48, and only one of the connector plates has a cooling extension. When bricks are assembled in a furnace lining air may be circulated over the metal extensions behind the lining to assist in cooling the bricks. Bricks may comprise more than two secondary bricks separated by plates similar to plates 37 and 37<SP>1</SP>.
