Abstract

962, 571. Spinning processes; knitting;looms combined with spinning machines. INDUSTRIELLE & COMMERCIALE PARIS-NORD. Dec. 5,1961 [Dec. 8, 1960], No. 42216/60. Headings D1C, D1E, D1F, D1K and D1W. Sliver of discontinuous or broken fibres is drawn to the fineness of a required yarn, it is given a "provisional" twist and fed directly to the machine by which it is made into a fabric or article. Two or more yarns, provisionally twisted in the same or opposite directions, may be combined and given a further provisional twisting prior to the direct feed to the machine. The provisional twist is retained long enough to enable manufacture of the fabric and the fibres of the yarn and yarn cohesion are maintained therein by mechanical interlacing of the yarn(s) as in weaving, knitting, chain stitching or braiding. As shown in Fig. 1, sliver fed through a drawing frame 2 is temporarily twisted by passage through an eccentric hole 5 in a disc 3, which is rotated in a continuous or intermittent manner in one or other direction and corelated with the yarn feed speed, and fed to a machine 1 e.g. a loom or a flat or circular knitting machine such as a full fashioned, tricot or Raschel machine. Several such apparatus may supply one machine and the apparatus(es) operate(s) continuously or intermittently according to the type of machine. In a modification (not shown) the sliver is twisted by passage around, and frictional contact with, the periphery of a rotated rubber-covered cone. As shown in Fig. 4, two (or more) slivers N-N<SP>1</SP> pass through a multiple drawing frame 2 and are separately twisted by devices 3, 3<SP>1</SP> into yarns 6, 6<SP>1</SP> which are combined in a twisting device 8 to form plied yarn 7a. The starting material may be filamentary tow which may be broken into discontinuous fibres by the stretching action of the drafting rolls and/or it may be fed to the front rolls for combining with discontinuous fibres.
