Abstract
962,432. Cooling towers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 10, 1962 [Jan. 25, 1961; Aug. 17, 1961], Nos. 2927/61 and 29717/61. Heading F4K. A packing for film-flow cooling towels comprises alternate flat and corrugated sheet of rigid thermoplastic organic polymeric material in which the peak of each corrugation of the sheet facing one side of a flat sheet is directly opposite to a peak of a corrugation of the sheet facing the other side of said flat sheet. As shown in Fig. 2, the sheets 1a, 1b, 1c have V-shaped corrugations in cross-section with an angle of corrugation of 60 degrees and are clamped to the flat sheets. Alternatively, the packing may be secured by a press-stud arrangement (Fig. 4a) in which a stud 2 formed on the peak of one corrugated sheet is passed through a hole 3 in the flat sheet and engages in an aperture 4 in the peak of an adjacent corrugated sheet. The aperture 4 is provided with radial slits at its periphery to allow for distension. Other securing means such as pinning, cementing or high-frequency welding may be employed. The packing may be assembled with the corrugations either vertical and having a sinusoidal form in the vertical direction (Fig. 5), or horizontal (Fig. 1, not shown). In the latter case the sheets are spaced apart and parts of the top corrugations removed to ensure an even supply and distribution of fluid to be cooled. The sheets may be formed of layers of different thermoplastics of differing thicknesses.
