Abstract

The compositions of the invention comprise stable aqueous dispersions of one or more organosiloxanes, in which the one or more siloxanes are present as a constituent of a gel which also contains a gelling agent and which is dispersed in water containing an emulsifying agent. The one or more organosiloxanes in the gel are preferably dissolved in or diluted by a solvent which preferably, is itself gelled by the gelling agent. The dispersions containing solvents may be prepared by a process in which the solvent is heated with the gelling agent and stirred, to form a gel, additional solvent is added to replace that lost by evaporation, the one or more organosiloxanes are stirred in, and emulsifier and water are then stirred in to obtain the dispersion. The preferred gelling agents are metal soaps (e.g. an aluminium soap of a branched chain fatty acid of 6 to 8 carbon atoms) and the preferred emulsifying agents are alkylarylsulphonates. Solvents specified are perchloroethylene and a mixture of trichloroethylene and xylene. The organosiloxane may be a silicone oil, resin or rubber. Examples are given of the compositions in some of which mixtures of a silicone rubber and a silicone resin are used (3, 7 or 8). Some of the dispersions are self-hardening. The compositions may be used for coating or impregnating paper or textiles to render them resistant to water or adhesives, and as mould release agents.ALSO:Paper and textiles are coated to render them water repellant or adhesive resistant, with compositions (see Division C3) comprising stable, aqueous dispersions of one or more organosiloxanes which are present as a constituent of a gel which also contains a gelling agent and which is dispersed in water containing an emulsifying agent. The gel may also contain a solvent which, preferably, is also gelled by the gelling agent. Curing agents for the organosiloxanes may also be present.ALSO:Paper and textiles are impregnated to render them water repellent or adhesive resistant, with compositions (see Division C3) comprising stable aqueous dispersions of one or more organo-siloxanes which are present as a constituent of a gel which also contains a gelling agent and which is dispersed in water containing an emulsifying agent.
