Abstract

An adhesive for bonding silicone rubber to other materials comprises (a) an organic solvent-soluble diorganopolysiloxane having a viscosity of between 10,000 and 20,000,000 c.s. at 25 DEG C. and in which the organic radicals are alkyl and/or aryl and/or alkenyl radicals, (b) a siloxane resin of the formula RnSiO4-n/2 wherein n has an average value of from 0,9 to 1,8 and each R is an alkyl, aryl or alkenyl radical, (c) CaCO3 as filler, and (d) an organic peroxide as vulcanising agent. Preferably the ingredients are used in amount, by weight, of (a) 30 to 70%, (b) 2 to 20%, (c) 10 to 65% and (d) 2 to 4%, the CaCO3 desirably having a particle size of less than 100 microns. Organic peroxides specified are benzoyl-, di-t-butyl-, di-cumyl-, acetyl-, 2:21:4:41-tetrachlorodibenzoyl- and t-amylbutyl-peroxides and t-butyl-hydroperoxide and-perbenzoate. Solvents, e.g. benzene and toluene, may be used in mixing the ingredients. Examples are given. In bonding silicone rubber to a steel roller (Example 2), the roller is coated with a toluene dispersion of a mixture of (a) a dimethylpolysiloxane, (b) a co-polymer of mono- and dimethylsiloxane units, (c) CaCO3 having a particle size of less than 100 microns and (d) benzoyl peroxide and the toluene is allowed to evaporate. An unvulcanised sheet of silicone rubber is then wound around the coated roller and the entire assembly is wrapped with linen tape and heated for 1 hour under pressure in a steam boiler. The tape is subsequently removed.
