Abstract

A water-repellant paste or grease consists of a water-insoluble, non-volatile liquid polysiloxane incorporating at least 20 per cent by weight of silicon dioxide powder obtained by the combustion of a silicon compound which has been pre-coated with a solid insoluble polysiloxane. Before or after this pre-coating, the silicon dioxide, which is a light powder weighing less than 50 gms. per litre, may be compressed to increase its apparent density. The greases may be applied to glass, ceramics, steatite, paper, cardboard, fabrics and metal to protect against or prevent loss of moisture as in water-proof papers or electrical connections and may be used in combination with non-silicic oils and greases. In examples: (1) silicon dioxide powder is coated with dimethyldichlorosilane and heated at 100 DEG C. to remove HCl, 20 parts thereof are incorporated with 80 parts of a liquid methyl polysiloxane to give a grease which may be used in electrical equipment such as ignition systems and may be diluted with organic solvents, such as ether, to give a coating composition; (2) 2 parts of silicon dioxide powder coated with a solution of a methyl polysiloxane resin and heat-dried is incorporated with 1 part of a liquid polysiloxane to give a lute.
