Abstract
Resin material, e.g. a urea formaldehyde condensate, in water is mixed into a foam of a hardener for the resin, e.g. orthophosphoric acid, and a foaming agent e.g. sodium alkyl aryl sulphonate and triethanolamine, dissolved in water. Short fibres of cellulose acetate improve the flexibility of the expanded product. Glass tubes in a divergent-convergent chamber or concentric tubes in a container are used with compressed air to produce the foam. The foamed mixture is moulded to form blocks, which, preferably after drying, are cut into slabs in such a way that each slab has one or more faces which have not contacted the wall of the mould, and the slabs are then subjected to dielectric heating. An emulsifier may be included in the resinate solution and resorcinol along with the hardener and foaming agent.ALSO:Apparatus for foaming a resin solution comprises a container, a vertical tube therein with its bottom end closed save for a small aperture and an inlet in its upper part, and an inner tube within said vertical tube. Compressed air admitted to the container forces the resin solution through the bottom aperture, mixes it with the air admitted in the upper part, and forces the foamed mixture out through the inner tube.
