Abstract
Hydrates and alcoholates of sym-dichlorotetrafluoroacetone are obtained by reacting the parent compound with water and aliphatic alcohols respectively. Examples illustrate the preparation of a hydrate containing approximately 2 moles of ketone to 5 moles of water, a methyl alcoholate and a lauryl alcoholate. The compounds are used for inhibiting bacteria and fungi (see Division A5). Specification 794,075 is referred to.ALSO:The growth of fungi and bacteria on seeds, plants, and in soil, infected or liable to be infected by fungi or bacteria, is inhibited by applying to said seeds, plants or soil a compound selected from sym-dichlorotetrafluoroacetone, its hydrates and its aliphatic alcoholates containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms in the alcohol moiety. Specified alcohol moieties are those of methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-amyl, isobutyl, n-butyl, n-hexyl, isohexyl, n-nonyl, lauryl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl and octadecyl alcohols. In tests, aqueous solutions of the parent active compound and a hydrate, methyl alcoholate and lauryl alcoholate thereof are employed, said hydrate containing approximately 2 mols. of ketone to 5 mols. of water.
