Abstract

A systemic agent for combating microorganisms present in or on a living plant comprises a mixture of an amino acid of formula R.CHNR12-COOH in which R represents H, CH3, CH3OH, CHOH-CH3, or CHOH C6H5 and R1 may be either hydrogen or a methyl group and a compound which is itself an effective fungicide, which mixture may be diluted by an appropriate carrier. Specified amino acids are DL-serine, D(+) serine, DL-alanine, glycine and their N-methyl derivatives such as sarcosine; DL-threonine and L(-)threo-b -phenylserine. p Fungicides specified include sodium dimethyl - dithiocarbamate, tetrmethylthiuram mono- and di-sulphides, 2,3-dichloronaphthoquinone and N-(trichloromethylthio)-tetrahydrophthalimide and S - (carboxymethyl) - N - dimethyl - dithiocarbamate. The composition may be diluted with water or as an aqueous slurry to which a surface active agent has been added. The invention also comprises a process for combating micro-organisms present in or on a living plant in which at least a part of the exterior of the plant is contacted with the above composition.
