961,783. Piston rings. BRITISH PISTON RING CO. Ltd. June 10, 1963 [June 20, 1962], No. 23688/62. Heading F2T. In a composite piston ring comprising first, second and third split rings, the second and third rings 11 and 12 having an annular width approximately half that of the first ring 10 and being mounted inside or outside of the first ring, the gaps in the rings are circumferentially staggered and relative rotation is prevented by projections, e.g. balls 13, on the first ring 10 engaging the gaps 11a, 12a in the second and third rings or by projections on the second and third rings engaging the gap 10b in the first ring. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the balls 13 are set in recesses 10a in the ring 10 and extend between semi-circular recesses 11b and 12b in the ends of the rings 11 and 12.
