Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula: <FORM:0961648/C1/1> where R is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and the 8-cyano group and the 10-hydrogen atom do not both have the same configuration, and their preparation by dehydration of the corresponding 8-carbamoyl ergoline, suspended in a tertiary amine, by an aryl sulphonyl halide. The starting material may be prepared by hydrogenation of the corresponding lysergic acid amide in acetic acid in the presence of platinum, followed if desired by methylation with methyl iodide in liquid ammonia in the presence of potassium amide. The compounds of the invention may be reduced to the corresponding amines, for example by lithium aluminium hydride or sodium and ethanol. The compounds of the invention may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in conjunction with a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent or carrier.
