Abstract

Novel racemic and optically active substituted morphinans of the general formula <FORM:1038732/C2/1> wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl group containing not more than 5 carbon atoms or an acyl group and salts thereof are prepared by reacting the corresponding 3-substituted morphinan unsubstituted on the nitrogen atom with either the required acid derivative containing the cyclopropylcarbonyl group, and reducing the resulting 3 - hydroxy - N - cyclopropyl - carbonyl-morphinan, or cyclopropylmethyl halide to form 3-hydroxy-N-cyclopropylmethyl-morphinan and, when required, converting the 3-hydroxy group into an ether or ester group. A product containing a 3-alkenyloxy group may be hydrogenated to a 3-alkyloxy-compound. Pharmaceutical compositions suitable for enteral or parenteral application contain as the active ingredient a substituted morphinan defined above. The compositions may be in the form of tablets, dragees, suppositories, capsules, solutions, suspensions or emulsions.
