Abstract

The invention comprises tetrahydro-isoquinoline derivatives of the formula <FORM:0995369/C2/1> wherein n stands for 1, 2 or 3, R1 is a halogen atom and R2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing up to 4 carbon atoms, and the corresponding compounds in which the hydroxyl group in the 6- or 7-position is replaced by an alkoxy group containing at least 2 carbon atoms or an acyloxy group, and acid-addition salts thereof. The compounds are prepared by reductively debenzylating, e.g. using hydrogen in the presence of a metal hydrogenation catalyst, a compound of the formula <FORM:0995369/C2/2> and, if desired, replacing the hydrogen atom of the hydroxyl group in the 6- or 7-position by an alkyl group containing at least 2 carbon atoms or an acyl group by etherification or esterification as the case may be, and also if desired, converting the product of any of the foregoing steps into an acid-addition salt. Pharmaceutical compositions for enteral and parenteral administration having analgesic, antitussive and antirheumatic activity comprise a compound of the invention together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. They may be formulated as tablets, dragees, suppositories, capsules, solutions, suspensions or emulsions. Specification 995,370 is referred to.
