Abstract

961,428. Vehicle anti-friction loading devices. DOUGLAS AIRCRAFT CO. Inc. Feb. 26, 1963, No. 7594/63. Heading B8E. An anti-friction loading device in a transport vehicle such as an aircraft comprises a floor made up of hollow panels, each defining a plenum chamber and provided with valved air outlets so that the load releases air to provide a layer of buoyency air. The panels 14 are arranged side by side along the length of the vehicle and are each connected to a pressure air manifold 24 through a valve mechanism 22. The panels comprises lamina 30, 36 forming a plenum chamber 38 between and having valved openings 34 in the upper lamina. In use as pallets 16 are pushed along the floor ball valves 60 are operated to release air to form a friction-reducing layer. When the pallet is positioned pins 72 are inserted through holes in the co-operating channels 20, 66 of the floor and pallets to hold the load in position. Insertion of a pin 72 through a depresser 70, and shaft 74 actuates an arm 78 to move a slide valve 80 to cut-off air pressure from the manifold 24 to the chamber 38 of that panel. The valve is held in either position by an arm 76 moving over dead-centre with respect to a spring 88.
