961,403. Ships' windows; clamps; stays. BECKETT, LAYCOCK & WATKINSON Ltd. Feb. 2, 1962 [Feb. 3, 1961], No. 4242/61. Headings EIJ, E2B and E2F. A ship's window 11 pivoted along its lower edge to a fixed frame 19 has a stay comprising two parts 40 hinged together at 43 and pivoted to the window and frame, respectively, at 58, 41, the stay having a separable pivotal-sliding connection with a link 46 pivotally connected at one end to either the frame (as shown) or the window so that two ranges of opening movement are possible according to whether the pivotal-sliding connection is separated or engaged. The connection is preferably formed by engaging the pivot 43 in a slot 47 in the link, a nut 44 being provided to clamp the window in any desired open position. The window hinges 15 permit limited movement of the window towards and away from the frame for the purpose of pressing a rubber sealing strip fitted in a groove 27 in the window edging 12 against a lip 26 on the frame. The pressure is applied by four clamps each comprising a pin 31 pivoted at 33 to the frame and carrying a collar 34a slidable on the pin and formed with a groove 35 which is urged by a nut 34 into engagement with a lip 37 around a keep strip 14 which holds the window pane in the edging 12. The pin 31 may be biased outwardly away from the window by a spring (not shown) surrounding the pivot 33. The window is counterbalanced by a spring motor of the type claimed in Specification 889,334, comprising a spring 54 rigidly attached to a quadrant 52 pivoted to a bracket 53 on the window and coiled freely around a cylinder 55 attached to a bracket 56 on the frame. An arm 57 is pivoted at its ends to the quadrant and to the bracket 56, respectively, so that as the window is lowered the spring is reverse-wound on to the quadrant and unwound from the cylinder 55.
