961,257. Sealing bale ties. SIGNODE STEEL STRAPPING CO. Aug. 24, 1962 [Aug. 21, 1961], No. 32689/62. Heading B6P. [Also in Division F2] A tool for crimping a seal and overlapping portions of a tensioned metal strap therein, includes means disposed to engage the seal at one edge thereof to cause severing of a portion of the strap along and by that edge of the seal. The complete tool, Fig. 3, includes a tensioning assembly 17 with a knurled strap engaging and tensioning wheel 24 (see Division F2) and a crimping assembly 18. Both assemblies are pivoted at 16 to a main frame 11, Fig. 10. The crimping assembly, Fig. 5, is operated by a pneumatic cylinder 35 with a piston-rod 45. Upon crimping the seal, a backing plate 60 is brought into engagement with the edge of the seal, Fig. 12, and the toe-piece 14 of the main frame 11 severs a portion of the top strap 31 against that edge of the seal.
