Abstract
961,188. Non-metallic tubes. K. WILLNER. Sept. 28, 1960 [Sept. 30, 1959], No. 33261/60. Heading F2P. A tube is formed from an elongated band bent about the longitudinal axis thereof such that the free edges of the band are near each other and there are means for joining the free edges together while leaving an opening 3 or openings between the edges. The tube has a number of sections 4, 5 and 6 of relatively high resistance to bending, there being between those sections a region or regions 7 and 8 of lesser resistance to bending, the tube at said region or regions still having sufficient strength to withstand force transmitted from section to section. As shown, the tube comprises an elongated band, e.g. of transversely corrugated plastic or rubber-like material, and may be also formed to triangular or circular shape. The free edges of the band may be formed with teeth 39, Fig. 17, which interlock with each other, Fig. 11, or interlocking of the edges may be achieved, by the use of a rod 27, Fig. 13, by bending over the teeth or by outwardly bending the teeth and encompassing the teeth by a channel-shaped clamping member 37, Fig. 16. Also, locking of the edges of the band may be accomplished by the use of members V-shaped or W-shaped in cross-section. In making the tube the band having a number of sections of relatively high bend resistance with adjacent sections joined at a region of relatively low bend resistance, is drawn through a die having the inlet and outlet sides thereof corresponding to the cross-section of the band and the crosssection of the tube to be produced, and the die being so shaped that bending takes place only on the regions of low bend resistance.
