Abstract

1477839 Tubular heat exchangers L P RHODES 25 Feb 1975 [18 Dec 1973] 58539/73 Heading F4S A shell and tube heat exchanger 10 comprises a bundle of braided or entwined tubes extending between flexible elastomeric tube plates 20 within a shell 11, with the shell-side fluid entering and/or leaving the heat exchanger via T-piece portions 13 which may be formed as integral parts of the shell (see Fig. 2, not shown) or formed separately and connected to the shell at 13A, Fig. 3. As shown the tube plate 20 is formed with the bevels 20A, 20B which cooperate with similar bevels on the T-piece and on a header 17 which is fastened to the T-piece via bolts 2A and nuts 25. Tightening of the nuts deforms the elastomeric tube plate thereby applying sealing pressure. The tubes of the bundle are supported at longitudinally spaced apart intervals by means of support rings 104a, 104b, 104c &c., e.g. of metal or plastics material. These rings may be of circular (Fig. 8, not shown) or cruciform shape (Fig. 10, not shown). In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the outer diameter of the shell at each end thereof is expanded to the size of the outer diameter of the tube plate (20), a swaged indentation (27) of annular form being given to the shell (II). In addition the ends (28) of the tubes (12A, 12B, 12C) may be flared to improve sealing with the tube plate. In another embodiment (Fig. 5) the tubes are sealed in the tube plate by expanding the ends of the tubes. In a further embodiment (Fig. 6) a clamping band (32, 32A) is used to seal the tubes and the tube plate.
