Abstract

1,212,221. Pipes formed from helically wound bands. S.O.M. EKSTROM. 22 Jan.. 1968 [26 Jan., 1967], No. 3262/68. Heading F2P. A ventilation duct for use in a mine, comprises a helically wound band 10, the convolutions of which are firmly and tightly interconnected by means of a jointing and reinforcement band 12, at flanges 11, 11 along the juxtaposed edges of the band 10 which is made of flexible material such as rubber or synthetic plastics possibly with fabric inserts therein, the jointing band 12 being resistant to bending about its longitudinal axis. A packing 13, e.g. of foam rubber, is interposed between the flanges 11, 11 and the jointing band 12 and the flanges 11, 11 may be provided with a number of longitudinal grooves, or serrations, not shown. The jointing band 12, which is preferably made of aluminium, can be bent from a flat ribbon into a U-shape around the flanges 11, 11 as the band 10 is being helically wound into shape, the opposite limbs of the jointing band being pressed axially inwardly by means of rollers, or discs, 15 so that the flanges 11, 11 are compressed to form peripheral beaded portions. It is possible by changing the winding pitch, to vary the pipe diameter within a wide range.
