Abstract

A flexible metallic sleeve or hose 1a is formed by helically winding a profiled metal strip 2 with the side edges of adjacent turns of the strip interengaged. The profile of the strip changes along its length so that, when helically wound, in one peripheral region 3 of the hose 1a transverse relative movement of adjacent turns of the strip is prevented whilst in another peripheral region 4 of the hose 1a transverse relative movement is permitted, whereby the hose 1a is free to bend in one direction but not in another. The profiled strip 2 is preferably formed by passing a plain metal strip 18 between rotary rolling dies whose circumferences correspond exactly to the length or to a multiple of the lengths of one turn of the strip in the hose, the profiles of the dies change over the circumference thereof in accordance with the required variations in the profile of the strip 2. In a modification, the strip is replaced by separately formed annular sectional units which are secured together. <IMAGE>
