961,116. Feeding webs. FR. HESSER, MASCHINENFABRIK A.G. May 20, 1963 [July 17, 1962], No. 19878/63. Heading B6B. Relates to apparatus for feeding (continuously or intermittently) flattened tubular material in which the web is in contact with a feed drum 5 over a predetermined arc defined by guide rollers 4, 6. According to the invention, slip between the two plies of the web as it passes round the drum is prevented by grippers 15 which rotate with the drum and are moved into and out of gripping position by cam mechanism at the points where the web meets and leaves the drum. The drum is driven selectively by two chain drives having different ratios; normally the slower drive is operative. The outgoing web passes over a biased roller 8 to form a loop. If a tension increase shortens the loop, a switch 36 is actuated to throw in the faster drive until the tension has been reduced. The surfaces of the drum and grippers have rubber layers to increase friction.
