Abstract
A ceramic tube of high alumina content, e.g. light-transmitting high-density polycrystalline alumina, is sealed at one or both ends by a cap of niobium having a cylindrical portion fitting inside or outside the tube and sealed in place by a layer of glass, of substantially the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the cap and the tube, between the surfaces. Powdered glass, preferably having the following composition by weight : SiO2 10%, Al2O3 37.1%, CaO 45.9%, MgO 5%, and SrO 2%, is placed in the inverted cup, through which a niobium tube may extend, the end of the ceramic tube is inserted, the cap, tube end, and glass are heated to melt the glass which is drawn by capillarity into the annular space between the tube and cap, and the parts are then allowed to cool; alternatively, the surface of the cap is coated with powdered glass in a binder of ethylcellulose in ethyl lactate and the cap and tube after assembly are heated in an atmosphere of argon to drive off the binder and melt the glass. In modifications the cap is in the form of a solid or hollow plug fitting in the end of the tube and provided with a flange extending over the end of the tube; a washer of molybdenum, preferably sealed in place by a layer of titanium, may overlie the flanged end of the plug. The Provisional Specification refers only to the use of a metal cap without restriction to niobium.
