Abstract

Composition of an unsaturated polyester resin, sodium silicate and dolomite as in the parent Specification, characterized in that the amount of polyester resin is 10 to 50% by weight of the total composition and the amount of dolomite is 1 to 3 times the amount of polyester resin in the case of non-expanded material and up to 7 times the amount of polyester resin in the case of expanded material. The amount of sodium silicate is preferably 30 to 44% of the weight of the polyester resin. When used in powder form the sodium silicate which may have a weight ratio of Si:Na of 2:1 to 3.5:1, is mixed with accelerator and polyester resin and to this mixture styrene may be added, followed by a silicone, dolomite, fluosilicate and a polymerization catalyst and the mixture is then polymerized. When floor coverings e.g. tiles, are required, silica is added to the above composition. In an embodiment of the invention liquid sodium silicate in aqueous solution is used. First the fluosilicate is diluted in the aqueous solution of sodium silicate, then the polyester resin, catalyst, accelerator and styrene are mixed and added dropwise with shaking to the aqueous solution. Silicone and dolomite are then added. An expanded material can be prepared from the above compositions, for example by adding powdered aluminium in an amount of 1 to 5 gm. per 100 grams of liquid sodium silicate. Glass fibres may be added.
