Abstract

Foamed or foamable vinyl-aromatic polymer resin compositions comprise a compound which exhibits a visible fluorescence under the influence of ultra-violet light. These compositions are preferably made by polymerizing an aqueous emulsion of a vinyl-aromatic monomer, a blowing agent, the ultra-violet flourescent substance and optionally other additives such as flame retarding agents. Polymerization catalysts such as dibenzoyl peroxide and emulsifiers such as polyvinyl-pyrrolidone may also be present in the emulsion. According to an alternative embodiment of the invention the foamable resin composition may be obtained by coating particles of a foamable vinyl-aromatic resin with a surface layer which comprises the additives. The preferred vinyl-aromatic resin is a styrene polymer. Homo-polymers of chlorostyrene, vinyl-toluene or a -methyl-styrene as well as copolymers of a vinyl-aromatic monomer with acrylonitrile, vinyl-chloride, vinyl-acetate, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate or ethyl acrylate may be used. The ultra-violet fluorescent compound, which is preferably soluble in the vinyl-aromatic monomer, may be a derivative of 4,41-bis(triazinyl)-stilbene -2,21-di-sulphonic acid, 2,5-(di-benzimidazol - 21 - yl) - furan, a ,b - di - (aryloxazol - 2 - yl) - ethylene or 2,5 - di - (benzoxazol - 21 - yl) - thiophene -particularly suitable is " Uvitex " (Registered Trade Mark) which is stated to be 2,5 - di - (41,51 - dimethyl - benzoxazol - 21 - yl) - 3,4 -dimethyl-thiophene and is added in a proportion amounting to 0.0001 to 0.1% by weight of the polymer. The blowing agent, representing 3-10% by weight of the polymer, is preferably a hydrocarbon such as butane or pentane. Chemical blowing agents such as sodium or ammonium bicarbonate, di-nitroso-pentamethylene -diamine or barium azo-dicarboxylate are also specified. Specified flame-retarding agents are tris(2,3 - di - bromo - propyl) - phosphate or hexa-bromo-cyclo-dodeca-triene.
