Abstract
960,900. Purifying exhaust gases. OXY-CATALYST Inc. Oct. 30, 1961, No. 38821/61. Heading F1B. Exhaust gases are mixed with air at 96 and passed through two beds of the same catalytic material 86, 88, in series which beds are arranged so that they can be independently recharged with fresh catelyst. The catalytic material, in the form of pellets, is contained between three removable slotted plates 24, fresh material being supplied through chambers 60, 67, whilst spent material is removed through chambers 82, 84. The gases flow through the inlet 92 into an inlet chamber 16 of decreasing depth and after passing through the beds 86, 88, escape through an outlet 90. Reinforcing ribs 16, 18, running longitudinally of the upper and lower casing walls 4, 6, support the upper and lower plates 24 and a sliding sleeve 98 adjusts the amount of air admixed with the exhaust gases. The upper bed 86 contains less catalytic material than the lower bed 88 and the spent material from the upper bed is reusable in the lower bed. The catalyst comprises an actuated metal oxide carrier, such as alumina, beryllia, thoria, magnesia, or zirconia, impregnated with an oxidising metal or metal oxide such as platinum, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium, copper, silver, chromium, vanadium, manganese or iron. In a particular example pellets of activated alumina are impregnated by dipping in a mixture of copper nitrate and chromium nitrate and then heated to decompose the nitrates.
