Abstract

Process for the regeneration of a catalyst contaminated with sulfur comprising a support material containing alumina and at least one metallic component selected from the metals and compounds of groups VI-A and VIII of the Periodic Table characterized in that the catalyst is placed in contact at an inlet temperature of up to about 371º C with a circulating stream of regenerating gas containing free oxygen in an amount that produces a first combustion wave in the catalyst bed with a maximum temperature increase of 111º C, the sulfur oxides are separated from the effluent regenerating gas and the purified regenerating gas is recycled, after said first combustion wave has passed through the catalyst bed the inlet temperature is increased to a higher level substantially within the range between 371º and 454º C, lets pass a second combustion wave with a maximum temperature increase 111º C through the catalyst bed while the circulation of the regenerating gas is continued and the sulfur oxides are continuously removed from it, the inlet temperature is then increased to more than about 538º C and the concentration of free oxygen in the regenerator gas is increased while the circulation of the regenerating gas continues at the input inlet temperature.
