Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce NOx in the combustion exhaust gas efficiently by adding a oxygen containing hydrocarbon or a precursor substances thereof to the combustion exhaust gas to oxidize a specific amount of NO in the gas to NO2 and, subsequently, denitrating catalitically by NH3.
CONSTITUTION: The oxygen containing hydrocarbon or the precursor substance thereof is added to the combustion gas to oxidize NO contained in said gas to NO2 as well as to convert 1/4W3/4 of NOx to NO2 and, thereafter, by adding NH3 to denitrate catalitically, NOx in the combustion gas is reduced. For example, 0.5W 3mol eq. of CH3OH against NO in the exhaust gas is added from a flow passage 2 and NO is oxidized in a reactor 3. At his time, the oxidation of NO to NO2 is pref. 1/3W2/3. Subsequently, NH3 is introduced from a flow passage 4 and a large amount of NOx is reduced to N2 by the action of a denitrating catalyst such as platinum, palladium, copper or iron in a reduction catalystic reactor 5 and the reduced gas is dischraged from a flow passage 6.
