Abstract
960,871. Electrophographic plates. RANKXEROX Ltd. (Haloid Co.). June 16, 1960, No. 21143/60. Heading H1K. An electrophotographic plate comprises a conductive base and a layer of photoconductive insulating particles incorporated in an insulat. ing binder overcoated with a transparent insulating layer. Suitable materials for the insulating layer are polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl formal, polyester resins, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, ethyl cellulose, epoxy resins, polyurethanes, and polymerized alkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids. Preferably the overcoating is applied from a solution in a solvent in which the binder is insoluble. If the binder is a thermoplastic it may be rendered insoluble by curing to a thermosetting condition after application to the base. The solution may be applied by spraying or dip rolling, with an air knife or doctor blade, or by dipping the plate into the solution and then withdrawing at a constant rate. A typical plate is produced by coating a solution containing 2.5 parts by weight zinc oxide, 1 part styrenealkyd copolymer, 3 parts toluene, and preferably Rose bengal on an aluminium backing to form a layer 1 mil. thick. After curing at 140‹ F. for half an hour a 1 Á thick overcoat is applied from a solution of 10 parts polyester and 90 parts isocyanate in 500 parts of " Cellosolve " (Registered Trade Mark) acetate. The overcoating resin is subsequently cured by storing in a high humidity atmosphere. Plates comprising a coating of photoconductive zinc oxide in silicone resin and those comprising selenium in a binder, as described in Specification 693,112 may be similarly overcoated. The overcoating provides a smooth durable surface from which developer may be readily removed after use thereby enabling the plate to be used repeatedly without deterioration.
