Abstract
960,602. Vacuum drying. LEYBOLD-ANLAGEN HOLDING A.G. Oct. 7, 1960 [Oct. 7, 1959], No. 34532/60. Heading F4G. Apparatus for continuously vacuum drying material in a freeze drying process comprises serially connected compartments 2 . . . 5, Fig. 1, maintained under different degrees of temperature and pressure by condensers 10, 21, 22, 23 and vacuum pumps 11, 27, 28, 29 through which the frozen material is carried in vessels 14, Fig. 2, from conveyer elements 13 for passage between parallel heating elements 12, so that in operation inside each chamber the vessels and heating elements form a plurality of alternate layers in a multi-layer system. The compartments are of unitary construction as are the conveyer elements 13, of which each has rollers 15 rotatably mounted on a U-shaped member 17 which runs on a guide rail 16 extending through all the compartments. The conveyer elements may be timed to allow periods of dwell in the compartments which are sealed from each other and may be brought into contact with and rest on the heating elements. In a modification the vessels 14, Fig. 7, pass by gravity down an inclined helical floor of the vacuum drying chamber, in which floor heating elements are inserted and a layer of heat transmitting medium, e.g. animal oil, is applied to the floor.
