Abstract
960,355. Bowling alleys. DOBAN LABS Inc. Feb. 13, 1963 [March 12, 1962], No. 5887/63. Heading A6D. An arrangement for sensing the pins remaining standing on the playing deck of a bowling alley during the course of play thereon, comprises a plurality of flash lamps 28 to 31 mounted above one side of the alley and arranged to operate in turn after each ball of a frame to illuminate successive groups of the array of pins 1 to 10, and a plurality of photo-sensitive devices 44 to 47 arranged above the other side of the alley and positioned to receive light reflected from the heads of standing pins only. The photo-sensitive devices are arranged so that when energized by light reflected from a standing pin, they operate indicators, such as an array of lamps corresponding to the pin array. Electric circuitry is provided whereby, as each lamp flashes in turn, the photo-sensitive devices are automatically switched into operation in a corresponding sequence, so that as lamp 31 operates to illuminate pin 10 only device 44 is operative, as lamp 30 operates to illuminate pins 6 and 9, devices 44 and 45 are operative, and so on. Relays are provided in series with the indicators to keep the latter energized until the end of a frame, and the sensing system is preferably arranged so that its operation is initiated manually at the beginning of a frame, but automatically after the first and second balls of the frame in response to movement of the pinsetter mechanism.
