Abstract

1,162,713. Bowling alleys. BRUNSWICK CORP. 12 Oct., 1966 [14 Oct., 1965], No. 45642/66. Heading A6D. In an apparatus for scoring splits occurring in a bowling, game pin setters provided with sets of pin detector switches, Fig. 1 are employed and score information is transmitted through a cable to a summer SSD which translates the signals into a single mechanical signal for each ball pincount. The mechanical signal is fed to a mechanical computation unit C where scores are computed and entered into appropriate memories. The computer controls a printer for printing the scores. The scoring system includes a split detector providing a signal derived from an input of specifically identified pins standing or fallen and where appropriate prepares the printer for printing a split designation with the scores. The summer operates by changing the length cf a mechanical linkage with the computation unit one unit responsive to each pin detector switch which remains closed after a pin detection cycle. Individual signals identifying the portion of each pin down are received by the sumrner and are compared by the split detector with a set of known pinfall combinations in which a split cannot occur. Fig. 3 shows the split detector 601 in which portions of slide bars, one for each pin, extending from the summer have highs 602 and tows 603, Fig. 8, which move into or out of alignment with each other depending on the movement of the slide bars during the summing procedure. A feeler system is provided to detect the presence of split conditions from the presence of highs on the slide bars. The application of the apparatus to the scoring system of United States of America Specification 3,435,120 is described together with the use of the projection apparatus of United States of America Specification 3,269,259 for projecting the image of the scoresheet on a viewing screen.
