Abstract
Fertilizer compositions contain as a nitrogen-delivering compound at least one organic or reduced nitrogen compound especially ammonia or containing ammonium ions, and as an agent for the inhibition of soil nitrification, one or more compounds as follows (a) trichloromethylpyridines or their salts; (b) compounds <FORM:0960109/C1/1> where A is methyl, ethyl, phenyl, tolyl or chlorphenyl if B is methyl or etheyl or A and B are joined with the basic nitrogen to form a 1-piperidyl, 1-pyrrolidyl, 4-morpholinyl, 3-pyrroline or hexamethyleneimine ring; (c) halophenols or their salts <FORM:0960109/C1/2> where X and one Y are each Cl or Br and the second Y is H; (e) compounds <FORM:0960109/C1/3> where X is halogen, n is 1 or 2 and R is an acyl radical derived from a monocarboxylic acid of mol. wt. 46-300 and which contains only the elements C, H and O; (f) haloanilines or their salts <FORM:0960109/C1/4> where X is H, -CH3, Cl, Br or F, Y is F, Cl or Br and R is an aimino, dimethylamino or an alkylamino or alkynylamino group containing not more than 5 C-atoms; (g) aminopyridines or their salts <FORM:0960109/C1/5> where X is H or methyl and Y is H, Cl or Br and (h) haloalkanes having 2 or 3 C-atoms and and 5-8 Cl and/or Br atoms. The nitrogen-delivering compound and the soil nitrification agent may be applied simultaneously or separately. The preferred concentration of said agent is 0.25-0.5% by weight based on the weight of reduced nitrogen in the fertilizer. Where the agent is applied separately it may be employed in the form of a solid or liquid concentrate. The preferred agents are of type (a) and include trichloromethylpyridines with further substituents such as methyl groups or Cl atoms in the ring, for example the photochlorination products of butidine, collidine and picoline. Suitable salts are hydrochlorides, nitrates, sulphates and phosphates. For agents of types (a) to (h) many suitable radicals are mentioned, those compounds mentioned in the examples, however, are: (a) 2,6-bis (trichloromethyl) pyridine, 3,4-dichloro-2-(trichloromethyl) pyridine, 3,4,5-trichloro-2-(trichloromethyl) pyridine, 2 - (trichloromethyl) - pyridine, the photochlorination product of 2,6-lutidine of b.p. 136-138 DEG C. at 1 mm. pressure, 2,4,6-tris (trichloromethyl) pyridine and 5-chloro - 2 - (trichloromethyl) pyridine, (b) N-methyl - N - nitroso - aniline, N - nitroso - dimethylamine and N-nitroso-piperidine, (c) 4-ethynyl - 2,6 - dimethyl - heptan - 4 - ol, 2-methyl - 3 - butyn - 2 - ol and 3 - methyl - 1-pentyn - 3 - ol, (d) 3,5 - dibromophenol, the sodium, triethylamine and ethanolamine salts of 2,5-dichlorophenol, the ammonium and triethanolamine salts of 3,5-dichlorophenol, 2-bromo-5-chlorophenol and B-bromo-2-chlorophenol, (e) 31-chloropropionanilide, 31-chloroisocaproanilide 41-bromoacetanilide, 41-chloroacetanilide, 41 - bromoisocrotonanilide, 21,41-dichlorohydrosorbanilide and 41 - fluoro - 2-methylacrylanilide, (f) 3,4 - dichloroaniline, m-chloroaniline, p - chloro - N - propynylaniline, 3 - fluoro - p - toluidine, 2 - chloro - p - toluidine, m - chloroaniline hydrochloride, p-chloro - N - methylaniline, 2,4 - dibromoaniline, p - fluoro - N - (2 - propenyl) aniline, the nitrate and formate of 2-bromo-N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine and the sulphate and oxalate of 3,5-dibromo - N - isobutylaniline, (g) 2 - aminopyridine, 6 - amino - 2 - picoline, 2 - amino - 4-picoline, 2 - amino - 3 - picoline, 2 - aminomonochloro - 3 - picoline, 2 - amino - 5 - bromo-3 - picoline and 3 - aminopyridine and (h) 1,1,1,2,2,3,3 - heptachloropropane, 1,1,1,2,3,3-hexachloropropane and octachloropropane. The said agents may be dispersed in one or more liquid carriers with or without the aid of dispersing or emulsifying agents. Suitable liquids are water, acetone, diiisobutylketone, methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, diethyl ether, toluene, methylene chloride, chlorobenzene and the petroleum distillates. The dispersing or emulsifying agents may be alkylene oxide/phenol or organic acid condensates, alkyl aryl sulphonates, polyoxyalkylene derivatives of sorbitan esters, complex ether alcohols and mahogany soaps. The solid compositions may be prepared by dispersing the said agents in finely divided talc, chalk, gypsum, vermiculite, bentonite, fuller's earth, attapulgite or pyrophyllite. The preferred fertilizer contains ammonium sulphate and may be mechanically mixed with the soil or applied to the surfac of the soil and thereafter dragged or disced in or transported into the soil in a liquid carrier by injection, spraying or irrigation. Many examples are given.
