Abstract

A process for producing chemicals, particularly antibiotics, by submerged aerobic fermentation of a microorganism includes the step of adding to the fermentation medium in an amount sufficient to prevent or reduce surface foam therein without simultaneously decreasing significantly the amount of dissolved oxygen or the oxygen transfer rate in the fermentation medium, as defoaming agent a water-soluble condensation product of ethylene oxide with a water-insoluble, hydrophobic polyoxypropylene chain formed by condensing propylene oxide with propylene glycol, the water-soluble condensation product having a molecular weight from 1600 to 2800 and the hydrophobic chain having a molecular weight from 1500 to 2500 and constituting about 90% by weight of the water-soluble condensation product. The process may be employed for the production of penicillins and tetracyclines; examples describe the production of 6-amino-penicillanic acid.
