Abstract
Textile material is water-proofed by treatment with a monoepoxyalkane, monoepoxyalkyl ester or monoepoxyalkyl ether having at least 12 carbon atoms in the molecule in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst. The material may be of cotton, linen or wool. It may be in the form or woven or non-woven fabric, thread or yarn. The monoepoxyalkane may be a monoepoxy pentadecane, hexadecane, heptadecane, octadecane or nonadecane having a straight or branched chain or cyclic structure. The monoepoxyalkyl ester may be a glycidyl, 1, 2-epoxybutyl, 2, 3-epoxybutyl or 3, 4-epoxybutyl ester. The acid of the ester may be trimethyl, dimethyl ethyl, tributyl, propyl diamyl, triamyl or dihexyl heptyl acetic acid. The monoepoxyalkyl ether may be glycidyl octylphenyl or lauryl ether. The epoxy compound may be employed dissolved in hexane, heptane, octane, petroleum ether, gasoline, benzene, toluene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethylene or ethyl acetate. The Lewis acid catalyst may be phosphoric or a sulphonic acid, boron trifluoride, boron trifluoride-ether, bentonite or montmorillonite. 0.1-10% of catalyst based on the epoxy compound may be employed. The epoxy compound may be applied by dipping, spraying or padding. Curing may be effected at room temperature to 100 DEG C. for 3 mins to 1 hr. After curing, the material may be rinsed in acetone. Specifications 825,805, 871,278 and 913,041 are referred to.
