Abstract

959,689. Sewing; sewing machines. J. C. FERRE. May 25, 1961 [May 31,1960], No. 18893/61. Heading D1G. A two-thread lock-stitch seam comprises on one side of the work double stitches spaced from one another and formed from one thread and on the other side continuous stitches formed from both threads. To produce the seam an unthreaded needle 15, Fig. 3, having an eye 14 closable by a sliding latch 12, is passed downwardly through the work 17 at a stitch length from the previously formed stitch. A horizontal portion 27 of one thread, extending between hooks 23, 25 on its way from the work to a supply reel 19, thus passes into the opened eye 14. The needle with its eye closed then rises to carry the doubled thread 18 through the work. The work then moves forward another stitch length and the needle descends to carry the thread through the work. Hook 25 is then disengaged from the thread, Fig. 6. The needle on commencing to re-ascend throws a thread loop 28 which is engaged by the beak 30 of a rotary looptaker 21 housing a bobbin supplying the second thread 20. Latch 12 opens eye 14 and beak 30 removes loop 28 from the eye and carries it around the bobbin while the needle rises through the work, Fig. 8. Finally, hook 23, which has reengaged thread 18 and hook 25 move in such a manner as to exert a pull on thread 18 for setting the stitch. Specification 959,678 is referred to.
