Abstract
959,682. Air cooling apparatus; tubular heat exchangers; heat pumps. C. F. FLETCHER. April 5, 1962 [Jan. 11, 1961], No. 1180/61. Headings F4H and F4S. A heat exchanger comprises means for selectively causing one or the other of a pair of dissimilar fluids, of which one is a gas and the other a liquid, to pass through a zone forming part of a first flow path, through which one of the pair of fluids flows, which zone is in heat exchange relationship with a third fluid in a second flow path. As shown, a U-shaped duct 1 forms the first flow path, the horizontal centre section 2 constituting said zone and housing an evaporator 3 of a heat pump system (not shown) which forms the second flow path. A fan 5 at one end of the U-duct draws atmospheric air over the evaporator 3. When the air supply drops below a predetermined temperature and water at a higher temperature is available, a cut-out 11 switches off the fan 5 and energizes a water pump 12 which forces water through pipes or sprinklers 6 over the evaporator. The water leaves the V-duct through a pipe 7 having a control valve 8 in parallel with an inverted U-pipe 9 with an anti-siphon bleed 10 to atmosphere at its highest point. With valve 8 open, water trickles over the evaporator and into the pipe 7, while with the valve closed, water builds up to a level L in the U-duct 1 before steady flow of water through the heat exchanger becomes established, thus submerging the evaporator 3.
