A combined steam and gas turbine power plant comprises a steam cycle including a boiler turbine at a condenser and a gas cycle including a gas turbine coupled to the steam turbine to drive a load, a combustion supplying hot gas to the gas turbine, an air compressor supplying air to the combustion chamber and boiler in parallel and a second gas turbine fed with hot gases from the boiler driving the compressor. The turbine plant, Fig. 3, comprises a compressor 2 supplying combustion air to combustion chambers 3, 3a. The combustion chamber 3a feeds a useful output gas turbine 5a driving an alternator 10 and the combustion chamber 3 a gas turbine 5 mounted on the shaft of the compressor 2. The combustion chamber 3 contains a tube vapourisation bank 8 which feeds a steam turbine 9 on the shaft of the turbine 5. The throttle control of the turbine 9 is connected to the control 4a of the fuel to the combustion chamber 3a. The combustion chamber 3a may contain a superheater or reheating tube bank. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the compression is in two stages with an interstage cooler cooled by the feed water. In this arrangement a valve controlled by-pass is provided around the combustion chamber 3 to regulate the rate of steam generation. The combustion chamber 3a, which is used to superheat and reheat the steam, also has a valve controlled by-pass. A valve is also provided to control the distribution of air flow between the two combustion chamber 3, 3a. A valve is also provided to control a by-pass containing a desuperheater between the steam inlet to the turbine and the condenser.
