A machine for pulverizing blocks of ice or frozen animal food 75 comprises a rotatablymounted cutter head 22 which carries a pair of knives 36, 37 and is formed with a cavity 80 in front of each knife for receiving cut material and a hopper 66 for directing the material to be pulverized downwardly on to the cutting zone which extends between vertical and horizontal planes passing through the longitudinal axis of the head; the circumferential extent of the cutting zone is less than the circumferential distance between the knives. A single head 22 may be employed of two as shown. A block of material 75 fed into the hopper 66 is alternately cut by the knife 36, which has a serrated edge, and the knife 37, which has a straight edge and is set further back into the head ; each knife is adjustable in height, secured by a wedge 34 and inclined to the longitudinal axis in the reverse direction relative to the opposite knife.
